Tamara Somers, Microsoft Ireland
"I think the childcare costs in this country are massively prohibitive. There are so many capable women who want to work outside of the home, and they should be afforded that opportunity."
- Tamara Somers, Microsoft Ireland
As part of the Inspiring Women Over 40 series, Tamara Somers reflects on her career journey, highlighting both personal and professional challenges. Working for Microsoft Ireland, she speaks passionately about issues like the prohibitive cost of childcare and the need for policymakers to support women who want to work outside the home. Tamara emphasizes the importance of financial independence, a sense of agency, and staying true to personal goals. She believes women are far stronger than they often realize and encourages them to pursue their passions.
Tamara shares how losing her job during the economic crash in 2009, a moment that seemed disastrous, ultimately led to the best years of her career. This pivotal moment allowed her to reach new heights, showing that setbacks can often be a stepping stone to future success. Her advice to those starting out in their careers? Follow your passions—what drives you at 18 will still matter at 40.
The "Inspiring Women Over 40" project is a tribute to women who defied convention, embraced their passions and redefined success on their own terms. Through an incredible photoshoot and a short interview I am telling the stories of 40 women over the age of 40, to celebrate their success and inspire others to live life on their own terms.
This project supports WorkEqual who promote progress by providing free support for anyone needing to enter or re-enter the workplace through one to one support. This can include interview preparation, CV writing and interview styling from their boutique in Smithfield all working towards building their confidence.
